I wanted to make it from Barcelona to Valencia in 4 days, so I pushed myself on Friday. I was feeling slow in the morning, but after eating a liter of ice cream in the afternoon, felt really good and was going at a good pace.
Some guy on a bike directed me to a bike path that ran alongside the main road, and it was really nice riding for a while, until the signs for it got confusing at a massive intersection and I decided to just stick to the shoulder of the highway. Bike lanes are great, when they are complete and clearly marked. I spent most of the remainder of the afternoon looking longingly over the fence that separated the road from the bike path and wishing it was more accessible.
I rode over the Williamsburg bridge’s European doppleganger
and got a little sad
But, I kind of forgot to eat any other real food during the day, and when I stopped for the night about ten km outside from Sagunt, I was still feeling ok, but tired. I waited in line FOREVER at the campsite for this French couple to figure out what seemed like their camping dates for the rest of the year. I should have just left the line to get something to eat but I decided to try patience instead.
So by the time I finally registered and had my tent set up, I was feeling dizzy and really weak. It hit me so fast and I was glad I was not still on the road. It seems like such a simple thing, to eat, but in the heat, I haven’t really been getting hungry.
